Toilet Training Clinic

We at Reinforcement Unlimited  are very excited to offer a Toilet Training Clinic.  Toilet Training can be a challenge for parents of typical children.  A variety of factors can contribute to delayed or dysfunctional toileting in a child.  Many day care facilities and schools will not serve a child who is 3 years old or older if they are not toilet trained.

There are a variety of materials available on toilet training.  It seems that everyone has their own opinions, sometime firm opinions, as to what you should do to resolve the issue of your child not being potty trained.  Our goal is to achieve successful potty usage by your child consistently.  We focus on positive interventions in order to make the entire process as pleasant for everyone as possible.  We review the medical, developmental and behavioral causes for delayed toilet training.  In cases where there is the possibility of medical factors contributing to the toileting issue we make appropriate referrals.  We strive to be informative for both parents and professionals who work with children with toileting issues. Successful intervention strategies, with research support, are our focus.

Who are we:
Dr. Robert Montgomery has been consulting on toilet training issues with children for nearly twenty years.  Our consultants have training and experience with consultation on various behavioral issues and in parent training.  We work together with parents to formulate a workable plan that is based on the child and what the research literature indicates is most likely to benefit the child and their family.

The Process:
We provide clinic and in-home consultation your child's toileting issues.

  • The process begins with a careful review of your child's records to determine if there is a need to refer you for additional medical evaluations.  A central goal of our consultation services is to determine if additional medical assessments need to be completed in order to ensure the health and safety of your child.

  • A detailed interview is conducted that focuses on both day-time and night-time routines and behavior.

  • Parents are often asked to give us detailed information on the process of their child's behavior around toileting.

  • We can proceed by asking parents to record information about toilet behavior for 3-15 days in order for a detailed analysis of patterns and routine.

  • Our staff are available to visit you and your child at home, at the day care facility, and at school in order to gain as complete and understanding of the process for your child as possible.

Once sufficient information is collected, and possible medical issues are resolved or addressed, the team will meet with the parents in order to present a detailed plan for toilet training your child.  Parent education and instruction in various techniques may be a part of the plan developed jointly by the parents and the Reinforcement Unlimited staff.
