The Open Georgia Autism Group is meant to be a
place where anyone can come and discuss issues relating to Autism generally and
Autism in Georgia specifically. We value all voices, free and open
discourse in keeping with the limits of civil speech is the goal of this
group. Information is power and open discussion and exchange of
information increases the quality and quantity of information to empower
consumers.
No topic related to Autism Spectrum Disorders is off limits. There are no
membership requirements or limits - everyone is welcome. The rules are simple:
no slander and the post must relate to Autism Spectrum issues.
There are a wide variety of Autism Listservs
available to you. As far as we can determine, ours is the only truly OPEN
listserv focusing on Autism in Georgia. What do we mean by "the only
truly OPEN listserv focusing on Autism in Georgia." There are other
Autism Listservs, there even are others that focus on Autism in Georgia.
However, each of them, to the best of our knowledge, limits speech to one degree
or another. Many require members to assert (one we know of even requires a
notarized affidavit) that the potential member is not employed by a school -
which eliminates parents of children with an ASD who happen to teach from
participating. Others have even more restrictive requirements. Some
restrict the topics that can be discussed to those the moderators find
"appropriate". It is our belief that everyone interested in
Autism needs to be allowed a voice. We work VERY hard to help children
with Autism develop their own voice and see restricting input and discussion by
anyone as incompatible with our values. So, we sponsor the Open Georgia
Autism listserv through Yahoo!
