The National Library of Medicine is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and offers a range of free information sources on medicine to the public.  It is the world's largest medical library and creator of Medline/PubMed.  Medline provides the public with access to a searchable database including information, references, and abstracts on medical and related topics from over 4500 biomedical journals.

Medscape offers specialists, primary care physicians, and other health professionals the Web's most robust and integrated medical information and education tools. After a simple, one time, free registration, Medscape automatically delivers to you the specialty site that best fits your profile. You can also change your Medscape home page to any of our specialty and profession sites. Some of Medscape's key features include:  Physician Optimized MEDLINE,  Over 250 on-line CME activities, .... and more.   The result is a medical Web site rich in content, broad in appeal, and high in quality."

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide a wealth of medical information to the public.  Their Health Topics A to Z provides a listing of disease and health topics found on the CDC Web site. It is not yet a complete index of the site. New topics are added on an ongoing basis.

 

The FDA site has sections on Drugs, Foods, Medical Devices, Biologics, Cosmetics, and other products that it regulates.  The website is fully searchable and has a wealth of information on medications be they prescription or over-the-counter.

 

The National Institutes of Health website offers a variety of information from each of its various Institutes.  Access is provided free of charge to Medline and other searchable databases on medical topics.  This includes access to information on current research programs and projects underway that are funded via NIH and its various institutes.

 

The U.S. National Institutes of Health, through its National Library of Medicine, has developed ClinicalTrials.gov to provide patients, family members and members of the public current information about clinical research studies. Before searching, you may want to learn more about clinical trials.
