New Credential from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board
Board Certified Behavior Analyst - Doctorate (BCBA-D)

The BACB Board of Directors has announced the development of a new credential for Doctoral-level Board Certified Behavior Analysts.  They report that they have periodically considered developing a Doctoral-level credential and that survey results, along with encouragement from consumers, has supported the development of this designation.  After considerable discussion and due consideration, the Directors have adopted the Doctoral-level credential.

BCBA certification will be the basis for the Doctoral-level credential that will be designated as BCBA-D.  Individuals who wish to become BCBA-Ds must first become certified as BCBAs and then meet additional requirements.

The BACB Board stated that:

"Doctoral-level credential is becoming increasingly timely with various legislative and political initiatives that sometimes call for differentiating levels of degrees.  However, the Master’s-level BCBA certification is in numerous ways the backbone of our field, and the BACB is fully committed to ensuring that Master’s-level BCBA practitioners continue to function with the same autonomy and authority that they have currently.  By adding the “D” to the existing “BCBA” to form the BCBA-D designation, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board underscores the importance of BCBA certification for BCBAs with all Graduate degrees."

The BACB welcomes input and feedback in this process, as together we advance the ethical and effective practice of applied behavior analysis.

Both Dr. Robert Montgomery and Dr. Christine Montgomery have received the designation of BCBA-D which recognizes that their graduate coursework at the Doctoral-level was Behavior Analytic beyond the courses taken at the masters-level for the BCBA.
